Fall Aspen Leaves Ornament

This fall aspen leaves ornament features one of my favorite close-up photographs from an autumn trip through Colorado. Rather than photographing the entire grove or sweeping mountain landscape, I moved in close and concentrated on the leaves themselves.

I photographed these leaves along Last Dollar Road in Colorado, the scenic back road between Ridgway and Telluride. It’s a beautiful drive that winds through wonderful aspen forests with mountain views opening up along the way. Most of the drive is simply gorgeous, although there is one section with some impressive drop-offs that makes it a little more adventurous!

Those back roads are often where I find some of my favorite photographs. On this particular trip, it wasn’t one of the sweeping mountain views that made me stop. It was the aspens themselves.

There was the beautiful gold I expect to find in Colorado’s aspens, but mixed among it were orange leaves, touches of green and even some wonderful red. I didn’t realize until later just how uncommon that red color can be in aspens. I simply knew the mixture was beautiful.

By moving in close and filling the frame with overlapping leaves, the photograph became less about a particular tree or landscape and more about the colors, shapes and textures of autumn. The result has an almost painterly quality, which is one of the things I especially love about this image.

For someone who loves aspens, Colorado or autumn color, this ornament is a little way to bring that beautiful season back each Christmas. It also makes a unique keepsake for someone who has traveled the back roads around Telluride or simply can’t get enough of fall.

Fall Aspen Leaves Ornament – Ceramic or Wood

The 3-inch round ceramic ornament has a glossy finish that brings out the beautiful range of gold, orange, red and green in the original photograph.

The wood ornament has a softer, more rustic appearance. The natural wood grain shows through the photograph, particularly in lighter areas, and darker areas of the image will reproduce darker on wood. Because the grain varies naturally, no two wood ornaments will look exactly alike.

For the brightest fall color and greatest photographic detail, choose ceramic. Choose wood if you prefer the softer appearance and character of natural wood grain.
